Fear of Ghosts: Horror Board Game

COVER.jpg

Project Date: December 2020

You find yourself and your friends alone inside of a client’s home, the sun long gone as only the dimly-lit halls can guide your way through. Ghost-hunting gear in hand, you all set out to find evidence of a sinister spirit which threatens to pick each of you off one by one, praying that you make it back out before you have to witness its horrific visage. You realize that at least one being in this house will make it out alive, and that you need to make sure that being is one of you.

Fear of Ghosts is a board game spin-off for the video game Phasmophobia, in which four ghost hunters must obtain evidence to determine the type of evil spirit haunting the buildings they visit, and escape before the ghost can catch them. This project was completed over the course of four weeks for a digital illustration course - students were required to develop a concept for a board game, original or not, complete with a set of rules and necessary materials to play the game.

While the board game was based greatly on Phasmophobia, aspects of various other horror board games such as Subterra also inspired its gameplay, with aspects of randomized locations and unique strengths/weaknesses in characters players may play:

Premise

One player is a vengeful Ghost, set out to kill anyone who may set foot in their home. The other players are Ghost Hunters, who must find the necessary evidence to prove what type of ghost has appeared, and escape with their lives.

This was a great experience in learning how to develop and create a functioning game, though this was a challenging project due my previous lack of experience as well as the time restrictions it had. I hope to find a way to make the game fully playable one day - when I do, I’ll provide a link to it here!
